Born in Fremont, Ohio, she has been specifically engaged in direct service and advocacy on behalf of farmworkers, Latinas and immigrant women. She has dedicated more than two decades to the eradication of gender-based violence and the promotion of gender equity, specifically on behalf of Latinas and farmworker and immigrant women. She is a nationally recognized expert on gender equity and workplace sexual violence against farmworkers and immigrant women. She is also the founder of the nonprofit Justice For Migrant Women. She wrote the ''Dear Sisters" open letter to the women of Hollywood from farmworker women that sparked the TIME'S UP movement.

We honor Monica for the way she exemplifies The Colored Girl core values:

IMPACT - As the founder of Justice for Migrant Women, her work as a lawyer & activist has supported advancing human & civil rights for countless women migrant workers. And the open letter set off a major uprising which set the precedent for the Time’s Up movement for women in Hollywood & beyond.

WELLNESS - Mónica employs a holistic, victim-centered approach to her work and she is an ardent supporter of worker-led movements, working to provide fair, just and equitable solutions for women (migrant workers).

EXPANSION - Going beyond, she also created The Bandana Project when she was directing Esperanza: The Immigrant Women’s Legal Initiative of the Southern Poverty Law Center. The project was created as a part of Esperanza’s national initiative to raise awareness about sexual violence against farmworker women in the workplace. The Bandana Project is a public awareness campaign aimed at addressing the issue of workplace sexual violence against farmworker women in the United States.

SISTERHOOD - In sisterly love & solidarity, she penned the infamous Dear Sisters open letter on behalf of Alianza members to be a voice to the voiceless. She has been specifically engaged in direct service and advocacy on behalf of migrant farmworkers, Latinas and immigrant women and has a long history of promoting women’s leadership and political power.

COLLABORATION - She is an active board member for in Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, lending to the support and solidarity of Latina farmworkers, and readily works side by side with other amazing women for equity & justice of women’s rights.
